Cold Sores are a result of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), a widespread virus spread through direct skin-to-skin contact. It’s highly contagious. Many encounter HSV in childhood (from family kisses), and most adults carry the virus without experiencing Cold Sores. This is called subclinical carrying and is harmless.

- Before Cold Sores appear, you might feel pain, burning, or numbness. Fluid-filled blisters usually form within 24 hours, weep, scab, and heal. Episodes are usually mild and resolve on their own in about 7-10 days.
- Some people might experience the return of a Cold Sore due to specific factors or situations. These triggers consist of:
- Feeling unwell, such as having a viral infection or fever.
- Being exposed to sunlight and wind. If you suspect this is a trigger, use moisturizing sun cream with high SPF daily.
- Dealing with stress.
- Experiencing fatigue.
- Changes in the immune system.
- Sustaining skin injury. Aim to avoid dry, chapped lips.
- Undergoing hormonal changes, like at the start of your period.
Sometimes, you might need antiviral medicine for Cold Sores if they happen often or are severe, or when you know triggers might cause them.
